Biography Joel Arrington's first job out of Duke University was as a junior assistant magazine editor. Along the way he picked up a camera, too, and found it to be a vital tool for a career that by 1965 had veered toward travel promotion. For about 20 years, while he promoted North Carolina as a destination for outdoor recreation, his photographic journey continued. He wrote articles and sent photographs to magazines and book publishers. Eventually he took early retirement to launch a freelance career in photo-journalism, contributing articles and photographs to such sporting publications as Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Salt Water Sportsman, and Wildlife in North Carolina, to name only a few.
With his pace slowed only somewhat in retirement, he concentrates on his love for photography, packing a camera wherever he travels, scouring for photographic subjects and attending workshops and photo seminars. His articles and commentaries still appear in varied publications while he works on exhibitions of archival prints of his award-winning photographs.
